The 27 September 2026 legal guarantee notice deadline: an FAQ

When does the requirement start?

27 September 2026. Regulation (EU) 2025/1960 was adopted on 25 September 2025 and applies from that date, with no transition period afterwards.

Who has to show the notice?

Any business selling goods to consumers in the EU. It is tied to where the shopper is, not where the company is registered, so it covers retailers across the single market and the goods they sell to EU consumers.

I sell to the EU but I am based outside it. Am I covered?

Yes. A shop in the UK, the US, China or anywhere else that directs its sales at EU consumers and ships to them is in scope. The consumer's rights do not depend on the seller's location.

What exactly has to be shown?

The harmonised notice on the legal guarantee of conformity: official artwork and text, published by the Commission, shown unchanged. It states the two-year legal guarantee, the seller's responsibility, the remedies available, and where to find country-specific rights. Online it must be shown before the consumer is bound, in colour, and it may use an expandable display that opens fully on first interaction.

Which language do I use?

The one your shopper can read — the language of the market you are selling into. The Commission publishes the notice in all 24 official EU languages, and English on its own is not enough for a shopper in, say, Germany or Poland. A shop selling across borders needs the matching version for each market.

Is the GARAN durability label mandatory for me?

Only if it applies. The harmonised durability label is required when a producer offers, at no extra cost, a commercial guarantee of durability longer than the two-year legal guarantee, covering the whole product. If none of your products carries such a guarantee, the label does not apply — but the legal-guarantee notice still does.

Does it need to be in the order confirmation too?

The regulation expects the information before the order and again in the confirmation, so the order confirmation email is the natural second place to state the legal guarantee, matching what the product page shows.

What happens if I do not show it?

Enforcement runs through national consumer-protection authorities and the general rules on unfair or misleading commercial practices, which vary by country and can include orders to comply and financial penalties. The specifics depend on the market, which is one reason to be ready before the date rather than after a complaint.

How do I set this up on Shopify?

Show the official notice on your product pages in the shopper's language, and add a matching snippet to the order confirmation email. Our step-by-step guide walks through each step.
